Urban Tree Specialists Services
Trees should be an asset to your property. To enhance this long-term investment, proper care and maintenance is necessary. All UTS tree care solutions are performed by ISA Certified Arborists to ensure these assets don't become a liability from lack of proper care.
Value-added "Whole Property" evaluation enables us to offer you the best tree solutions for the long-term care of your property. The overall value and safety of your environment is enhanced by addressing all tree needs, rather than one isolated issue.
Tree Pruning
We provide structural pruning for proper form, as well as stability and longevity. Selective structural pruning also gives you additional clearance over your yard, house, office, signage, and/or lighting; resulting in better air movement, additional sunlight, and less debris in your gutters. The goal of proper structural pruning is to enhance the beauty of your property and provide a safer living environment by improving the health and integrity of your trees.
Tree Removal
A Certified Arborist is qualified to help you decide if a tree should be removed. UTS views tree removal as a last resort, although there are cases when it is necessary.
Why remove a tree?
- The tree is dead or dying.
- The tree is considered irreparably hazardous.
- The tree is causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning.
- The tree is crowding and causing harm to other trees.
- The tree should be removed to allow for new construction.
- The tree is to be replaced by a more suitable specimen.
Wrong Tree, Wrong Spot - There are many environmental conditions that can affect tree survival. Is your tree fighting a losing battle because it has been planted incorrectly or in a poor location?

Methods of tree removal:
- Crane - Used for safe removal of difficult or unstable trees. Utilizing the crane helps us protect both our crew and your property.
- Technical - Often involves removals in small, tight places utilizing lowering devices, rigging and ropes to safely dismantle the tree one piece at a time.
- Target Felling - When a tree is unsafe to climb and/or there is enough space, notches are used to drop the entire tree.
Stump Removal
Stump removal is recommended in most cases.
- Stump removal goes hand-in-hand with removing a tree most of the time, exceptions are forest or less frequented locations.
- Stumps are removed using a portable machine similar in size to a lawn mower with the ability to fit through a 36" gate.
Integrated Pest Management
UTS considers a comprehensive plant health care system to include the following:
- Proper Tree Evaluation - Species identification, susceptibility, and environment.

- Disease Diagnosis - Caused by infectious or living agents such as fungus, virus and bacteria. In many cases, insect problems are secondary to problems initiated by a stress disorder or pathogen.
- Disease Controls & Monitoring - Depending on the size and species of tree, this may range from checking a few trees on your property on an annual basis to frequent quarterly or even monthly evaluations.
- Prescription Fertilization - Some species have a difficult time obtaining the nutrients they require from the soil. Site specific fertilization can improve tree health, appearance, as well as increase growth rate.
Preservation & Consultation
Ideally, a Certified Arborist is contacted for consultation during the planning stages of a construction project where trees are to be impacted. Valuable trees may be preserved if appropriate measures are taken in advance to protect root zones, trunks and canopies.
If damage has already occurred, to prevent further damage and for optimal preservation, contact UTS to consult on the following:
- Physical injury to the trunk and crown
- Soil compaction in the root zone
- Severing of roots
- Smothering roots by adding soil
- Split and broken branches
- New exposure to wind and sunlight
Cabling & Bracing
Trees in a naturally wooded habitat are usually not a threat to people or structures. However, trees close to houses and areas frequented by people must be maintained and kept structurally sound to mitigate hazards.
Cables & Braces provide hardware support of potentially weakened or structurally unstable trees. A Certified Arborist from UTS can help determine if your tree is a candidate for these measures and educate you on the importance of regular and proper inspection.
Educational Presentations
Is your organization or group interested in hearing more about UTS services from its Certified Arborists? Are you interested in partnering up to educate others on the environmental benefits of trees and their proper care?

ISA Services That An Arborist Can Provide
URBAN TREE SPECIALISTS WILL NOT:
Top Trees - TREE TOPPING IS BAD!
Tree topping is the large scale removal or cutting back of the large, mature branches on trees. This mutilating method leaves significant open wounds on trees that are easily subject to disease and decay. It immediately injures the tree, decreases the tree's natural life span, and detracts from the natural appearance of the tree.
Spur or Spike Living Trees
Spurs / spikes / gaffs are not used in trimming operations, but may be used to safely remove a tree. The technique of using spurs or spikes to climb a tree leaves multiple wounds in a tree's cambium (layer of growth cells in between the bark and wood), and these become entry points for insects, disease and decay.
Prune Susceptible Species in Spring and Summer
Due to disease and pest susceptibility, we strongly encourage you to avoid having work performed on your Oaks, American Elms, Scots and Austrian Pines during the months from April-August. A UTS Certified Arborist will advise you on the best timing for tree pruning.
